Pain is defined as the “unpleasant emotional experience caused by tissue damage or disease”. Based on this definition, physical pain is a personal experience and requires personalized treatment. Several signals are released and transmitted to the brain via neural pathways when damage occurs in neural cells. The brain perceives these signals as pain.
Pain classification can be made based on:
- Neurophysiological mechanisms
- Etiology (cancer pain, postoperative pain, post-herpetic neuralgia, sickle cell anemia-related pain, articular pain)
- Location (headache, facial pain, low back pain, pelvic pain, etc.)
